BUGLE CONTEST
2008
Hatherleigh Silver Band Crowned Bugle 3rd Section Champions
On Sat 21st June Hatherleigh Silver Band took part in the ‘West of England Bandsman Festival’ at Bugle in Cornwall. Flying the flag as the only representative from Devon, the band played in 2 sections against strong Cornish opposition. In the 4th Section they played Gordon Jacobs ‘Suite in Bb’ and gained 3rd prize in what the adjudicator said was a high standard of playing by all bands. The Band also entered the 3rd Section playing‘The Malvern Suite’ by Philip Sparke and were crowned Champions at the end of the day. Greg Morgan the bands Principal Solo Cornet player was awarded the best player in the section to the delight of his fellow players - a worthy winner that was highly praised by Mr Stan Lippeatt ( The Adjudicator for the day )
Earlier in the day all of the bands marched through the village to the contest field being judged on their deportment. The results gave 1st place to Helston Town Band and 2nd to Bugle Silver Band, our points meant that we were given a 4th place but the remarks were once very complimentary and something to be proud of as the standard of deportment was very high indeed.
An enjoyable day was had by all and valuable experience was gained by the newer members of the band.

March
The contest was concluded with the tradition of Royal Trophy winners St Austell playing a short programme in the village square.
They chose to play the March ‘Knight Templar’ followed by the hymn ‘Whitburn’ and finished with a performance of ‘On the Quarter Deck’ full of swagger and style from the overjoyed band just as the heaviest rain of the day began to fall.
