July 22nd
Hatherleigh Silver Band are very sad to announce the passing away of our great friend Wayne McCarthy on Sunday 20th July.
During a distinguished career, Wayne had been Principal Cornet of Britains leading bands and enjoyed numerous victories nationally. He also won accolades and major honours for his solo playing.
In recent years, Wayne has helped bands in Cornwall and Devon and has taught so many of the Westcountry's top players. Dr Nick Childs, the conductor of Black Dyke Band, recently spoke to our own Greg and Claire about Wayne. He described him as "a quite brilliant Cornet player" and "consistently excellent".
Over the last few years Wayne has offered free tuition to several of our players and to the band and had become a good friend to many of us. He will be very much missed.
July 3rd - Bugle Victory
On Sat 21st June Hatherleigh Silver Band took part in the ‘West of England Bandsman Festival’ at Bugle in Cornwall. Flying the flag as the only representative from Devon, the band played in 2 sections against strong Cornish opposition. In the 4th Section they played Gordon Jacobs ‘Suite in Bb’ and gained 3rd prize in what the adjudicator said was a high standard of playing by all bands. The Band also entered the 3rd Section playing‘The Malvern Suite’ by Philip Sparke and were crowned Champions at the end of the day. Greg Morgan the bands Principal Solo Cornet player was awarded the best player in the section to the delight of his fellow players - a worthy winner that was highly praised by Mr Stan Lippeatt ( The Adjudicator for the day )
Earlier in the day all of the bands marched through the village to the contest field being judged on their deportment. The results gave 1st place to Helston Town Band and 2nd to Bugle Silver Band, our points meant that we were given a 4th place but the remarks were once very complimentary and something to be proud of as the standard of deportment was very high indeed.
An enjoyable day was had by all and valuable experience was gained by the newer members of the band.

May 7th - What a day with Philip Harper
Hatherleigh Silver Band welcomed Philip Harper on Sunday 27th April for an intensive workshop. Philip and the band worked hard on dynamics and balance and the results were most impressive.
Philip was utterly professional but also very calm and clear with a great sense of humour and he has a rare ability to connect with young and older players whatever their ability and to bring the best out of them instantly.
Philip put the band though it's paces by starting the day with some hymns followed with the march 'The New Colonial', the theme from the fil 'Gladiator was played after a lovely buffet lunch. The day finished with the two test pieces the band will playing at Bugle this year.
A huge thankyou must go to Philip for making the day a very enjoyable experience for all involved
The band are now very keen to organise more workshops later in the year.
April - 23rd Welcome
We would like to welcome back Hazel Parsons to the band, Hazel played for HSB for many years before moving to Torrington Band and also a short spell at Bodmin Town. Hazel has a proven record after winning best player at Bugle on many occasions and takes her place on the Front Row.
Sun Apr 27th will see Philip Harper in the rehearsal room to pass on some of his great experience during the whole day of playing. The Band is very fortunate to have one of the country's top conductors assisting to help make HSB a better band and one to feared on the contest stage. The possitive attitude of the committee in arranging ways for HSB to move forward like this only go to show that the Band is in good position.
