Hatherleigh Silver Band - SWBBA 4th Section Champions of the South West
The 63rd Annual Championships of the South West Brass Band Association were held at the Riviera International Conference Centre, Torquay on Saturday 7th November 2009 where 31 bands competed in 6 sections
At 10.15am Hatherleigh took to the Torquay Stage and produced the winning performance and in doing so, the band took the only other prize open to us - that of Best Bass section. Once again Torquay proved to be a popular venue, which reflected in the high overall standard of music making and everybody enjoying the competitive but friendly atmosphere for which these Championships are noted. The Adjudicator, Barry Thompson, said he had enjoyed his long day of quality music making and the standard of performance was extremely high
The preparation and hard work by everyone certainly paid off for Hatherleigh Silver Band as they were crowned SWBBA Contest 4th Section Champions.
Competing in the 4th section against 7 other bands from a number 2 draw, the band performed “Four Little Maids” by John Carr as their set test piece conducted by their Professional Conductor Mr David Hayward.
The new conducting partnership (Robin Wonnacott and David Hayward) have been working hard with the Band over the past four weeks and were thrilled with the performance on stage and especially the result.
The Band were also awarded the special prize in the Section for the Best set of Basses. The engine room consisted of Louisa Mitchell and Tony Burton on EEb Bass and Mark Quick on BBb Bass, all three were so pleased to have been awarded the prize as the standard within the section was very high. The band were especially pleased for Tony as he has now completed 70 years of banding. It proves that experience is a wonderful thing to have within a band and with Lou (Louisa) on board it is also good to have a bit of Girl power, we believe she still has a beaming smile and telling everyone that she meets "We Won"
