TROMBONES

1st Trombone

Ian Heard

After a nine year break from playing, Ian joined HSB in 2023. Although from a Cornish Brass Band family, Ian grew up in Exeter and played with Lympstone and Totnes Bands before at 21 years old, joining HM Prison Service and moving to London in 1987. Ian joined Crystal Palace Band in South London and had a very enjoyable and successful 10 years, not least meeting his now wife and Flugel player Emma. In 1997 Ian and his then young family moved back to Devon and after brief playing spells with Tavistock Town and St Breward bands, he and Emma joined RBL Crownhill (Plymouth) Band which subsequently became Soundhouse Brass.

Now both retired Ian and Emma can now devote more time to banding again and have thoroughly enjoied the 'HSB experience' so far. Ian is also extremely proud of his two grown up children, son Matt followed Ian into the Prison Service and daughter Kirsty has been a cornet player in HM Royal Marines Band Service for 12 years as well as playing for Championship Section Roche Brass in Cornwall in her spare time.

2nd Trombone

Hannah Vodden

Hannah  joined HSB in late September 24. She had become a regular dep on 2nd Trombone and now has permanently taken up the 2nd Trombone seat after spending an exciting weekend away with the band, performing on the Reading Town Hall stage.

Hannah has been exposed to music right from the start as she was born into a musical family with grandparents, parents and siblings all playing a musical instrument, with fond memories of sitting in the pit orchestra for stage shows where her grandma played the piano.

Hannah started playing when she was around the age 7 years old. She was first introduced to the world of brass bands when being taken along to the local brass band her parents played in as there was no baby sitter, eventually joining in herself. When at Secondary school Hannah joined the Devon Youth Brass Band and loved the idea she was able to play music and socialise with other people her age.

Hannah then went on to play with Lympstone band in 2005, leaving in 2019 to concentrate on other things, but keeping her hand in by joining the Exeter Railway Band on Principle Trombone, where she also took up the post of Social Secretary, organising social events for the band members.

In her spare time Hannah enjoys an early morning swim before going to work, building up her walking repertoire and most importantly, socialising with her friends and family. Hannah is really looking forward to her new adventure with HSB and loves to get stuck into new challenging pieces.

Bass Trombone

Tim Williams

Tim joined Hatherleigh Silver Band in 2013 and has quickly established himself as King of the Road. Tim has made a virtue of often being last out of the pub by establishing the wonderful Bandamonium Brass Band Festival, which is going from strength to strength, and really putting Hatherleigh on the British brass band map. Outside of band, Tim enjoys hiking on Dartmoor, and stalking Porth Levan band, following them to the ends of the country in the name of “research”.
